Firmly in the Sabbathian Doom camp Boston’s ISIS, mentored by Aaron Turner also responsible for the esteemed Hydrahead label, impressed mightily with the crushing ‘Celestial’ outing. The band, which included erstwhile members of LOGA, CABLE and UNION SUIT, had gelled in 1997 around Turner and a rhythm section comprising bassist Jeff Caxide and drummer Aaron Harris. Later Personnel came in the form of second guitarist Mike Gallagher and vocalist Cliff Meyer.
The group made a forcible entry upon the scene with the 1998 ‘Mosquito Control’ EP. Electronics for this release would be supplied by Chris Merechuk. A follow up EP ‘Red Sea’ boasted keyboards courtesy of AGORAPHOBIC NOSEBLEED’s Jay Randall.
The ‘Celestial’ album made for disconcerting listening fracturing monolithic slabs of twin guitar Doom hung together with eerie ‘SGNL’ drone passages. The double vinyl version of ‘Celestial’ would come lavishly packaged with an elaborate gatefold sleeve complete with multiple inserts. The records themselves would come pressed in red and beige marbled heavyweight vinyl...
